At what age should a private pilot stop flying?
In the U.S., there are no
Not too many people are aware that pilots in the U.S. must retire at age 65, due to federal regulations. That may be set to change, however, if a just-passed bill succeeds in becoming law.
U.S. active certificated pilots - average age 1993-2020
This statistic illustrates the average age of active pilots in the United States from 1993 through 2020. In 2020, the average age of U.S. pilots stood at 43.9 years, lower than in the previous year.
An individual must be 16 years old to solo an aircraft, 17 years old to obtain a Private Pilot Certificate, 18 years old to obtain a Commercial Pilot Certificate and 23 years old to obtain an Airline Transport Certificate. FAR Part 121 (major airline regulations) require all pilots to retire at the age of 65.
A private pilot license does not expire! Once you have worked hard to earn it, it will last you a lifetime. It is important to refresh your flight knowledge every two years with an instructor to ensure your piloting skills are maintained.
“Am I too old to be a private pilot?” Flight instructors hear this question often. The answer is, as long as you can pass the third-class medical exam, it is doable. There is no maximum age limit for private pilots.
Pilots are paid by the hour, not per flight but make. but hourly pay rates mean that the per flight compensation ranges from over $3000 per flight for senior captains on long flights with large aircraft to as little as $20 for the lowest paid pilots on the shortest flights.
In the U.S., there are no FAA age limits for pilots except for commercial airline pilots employed by airlines certificated under 14 CFR Part 121.
There is no maximum age for acquiring a private pilot certificate. Once someone gets this certificate, they may exercise the privileges of that certificate as long as they continue to get a medical certificate and a biannual flight review.
PRIVATE PILOT'S CERTIFICATE
Less than one percent of the U.S. population holds a Private Pilot Certificate. You have just taken the first step towards joining one of the most elite groups of individuals in this country. Training to become a Private Pilot will challenge you mentally, physically and emotionally.
What is the pilot shortage?
Regarding magnitude, in our most likely scenarios, there is a global gap of 34,000 pilots by 2025. This could be as high as 50,000 in the most extreme scenarios. Eventually, the impact of furloughs, retirements, and defections will create very real challenges for even some of the biggest carriers.
Most such payouts approach or exceed seven figures, he adds. Other estimates range between $2 million and $2.5 million. The problem — read opportunity — is that many pilots have not focused on how they will invest that money after they retire — usually at 60 or earlier.
Smith explained that after the global financial crisis "pensions went away for airline pilots, but a non-elective contribution was added to their 401(k) plans." This non-elective contribution is now around 17% of their income (for the major airlines) added to the 401(k) plan for every pilot, he noted.
You already know the answer: YES. Earning your private pilot license opens a world of new possibilities! If you're looking for thrill and adventure, or a weekend hobby and stress reliever: the choice is yours and its right at your fingertips.
90-Day Requirements
If you want to have company on your flights, you are required to complete three take off and landing cycles, every 90 days, in the aircraft you plan to carry passengers. This requirement doesn't have to be three separate events. They can be touch-and-go's in one day.
You may find it easier and more productive to focus on flying at least once a week and/or aim for a particular type of experience—for example, plan and fly two cross-country missions each month. You may want to aim for an hourly requirement every month, say 10 hours.
How much does a Fedex Pilot make? As of Dec 27, 2023, the average annual pay for a Fedex Pilot in the United States is $130,916 a year. Just in case you need a simple salary calculator, that works out to be approximately $62.94 an hour. This is the equivalent of $2,517/week or $10,909/month.

Currently, while the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards allow a person between the age of 60 and 65 to serve as pilot in command (PIC) of an airplane with two or more pilots, in international commercial air transport operations, the PIC must be paired with a pilot younger than 60 years of age.

However, some Southwest pilots earn as much as $549,000. Similarly, United Airlines pilots earn an average of $205,000. The average Delta Airlines pilot earns $192,000 with top-earners making $526,000. American Airlines pilots earn an average salary of $118,000, with some pilots earning in excess of $700,000.
However, with an FAA-mandated retirement age of 65 years old, the major airlines in the U.S. are now facing a situation where thousands of their pilots are set to retire within the next few years, representing a significant portion of their workforce. This is the leading cause of the pilot shortage in the U.S..
“Safety considerations drove the establishment of the current international standard of age 65 mandatory retirement, and raising the pilot retirement age would introduce additional risk into commercial aviation,” said Capt. Ed Sicher, the Allied Pilots Association's president.
The answer is YES – you can wear glasses and be an airline pilot! Perfect uncorrected vision is not a requirement to be a pilot or an air traffic controller. Glasses, contact lenses and refractive surgery are all (with certain limitations) acceptable ways to correct visual acuity problems.
